Paediatric Urology

Paediatric urology is a highly specialised practice, which covers all medical problems that affect the genitals or urinary tract of infants and young children. Dr Maharajh diagnoses and treats a wide range of conditions in this field, the most common of which is urinary tract infection. Some other common conditions include:

  • Antenatal hydronephrosis
    This refers to an enlarged kidney that is generally diagnosed in babies before birth
  • Hydrocele
    Fluid accumulates in the scrotum, causing swelling.
  • Hydronephrosis
    A blockage in the kidneys cause swelling in the kidneys.
  • Neurogenic bladder
    This condition causes problems with the bladder and may require surgery.
  • Spina bifida
    The spinal cord does not close properly during a baby's development and needs to be repaired. This may affect bladder function.
  • Undescended testes
    One or both testicles do not move down into the scrotum during a baby's development and may require surgery.
  • Vesicoureteral reflux
    This condition causes urine to back up from the bladder to the ureter.
  • Ureteropelvic junction obstruction
    The flow of urine is blocked between the ureter and the kidneys.
  • Phimosis
    This refers to a tight foreskin.

Dr Suhani Maharajh is a Specialist Urologist in Durban. After completing her undergraduate training summa cum laude at Nelson R Mandela School of medicine, she pursued her true passion and qualified as a urologist in 2012 and was awarded the Lionel B Goldscmidt Medal.
